I've been in the habit of watching MSNBC's "UP" on weekend mornings since Chris Hayes started that show. But I will be stopping now. This mornings show was enough. It has come to focus almost exclusively on presidential politics and does so with all the insight of a sports reporter calling a horse race. Kornacki is long on energy and short on real analysis and has become as formulaic and predictable as the soap commercials between his segments.
Today's show focused, as usual, on the republican field of candidates, both announced and unannounced. A lot about Jeb Bush, Chris Christie in New Hampshire, then touching also on Rubio, Lindsay Graham, and a lengthy piece about Mike Huckabee's messaging. And then of course the obligatory spot about Hillary.
But in that two hour show I heard not one word about Bernie Sanders. Not one word about Jim Webb, Not one word about Martin O'Malley. (Caveat - I did go out to the kitchen twice for brief moments). He is willing to devote significant time to quite a number of republican longshots, but precious little if anything about any democrat besides Hillary.
I had thought that the MSNBC brand was trying to be more hip than Meet the Press in its editorial orientation to political coverage. Not so in this case. And the campaigns are just getting started.
